The Viet Minh, led by Ho, tried to oust the French from the rest of the penninsula. The U.S. viewed this as part of the Cold War. They escalated aid to the French, whose influence ended with their defeat at Dien Bien Phu and the 1954 Geneva conference which resulted in a ceasefire and the temporary division of the country. VHS.

Richard Nixon had promised, if elected, to end the war in Vietnam. From 1968 to 1973 Nixon and Henry Kissinger worked to end the war, preferably with a victory through increased bombing, but end it any way necessary. Vietnamization increased  and U.S. ground troops were withdrawn except for some advisers  to the South Vietnamese army. Prisoners of war were exchanged, to "peace." VHS.
