The treasures brought back from Mexico by the Spaniards soon resulted
in the arrival of more Europeans-adventurers, explorers, missionaries.
The rush for gold and silver was on. European diseases and forced labor
in the mines decimated the Indian populations. The treasure houses were
looted and their contents melted down for bullion.

The exciting adventure of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who risked
their lives and journeyed over 8,000 miles to chart the overland route
to Oregon. Commissioned for the job by President Jefferson, they headed
into the wilderness with about 50 men. Along the way, they encountered
Indians, collected new plant specimens and minerals, and kept a sharp lookout
for grizzly bears. Two years later they returned in triumph.
