Composition II Paper 1-Conflict, Setting, and Central Idea Assignment
For Paper One, you need to analyze a short story and make
a statement about how the protagonist’s central conflict and the setting are
each related to the central idea.. That statement will be your thesis
statement.

Sample thesis statement is as follows:
(using “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck) The man
against self conflict the protagonist faces as she represses her
individuality and the isolated, ranch setting during a restrictive time for
women reinforce the central idea
that society’s enforcement of gender roles can lead to resignation and
depression.
