Mid-term and Final Exam
To prepare for
your tests, read introductory material and assignments carefully and
thoughtfully. Note the period in which the work was written, by whom it was
written, and to what nation or state the writer belonged. Be sure you know the
genre of what you read. (Did you read an epic poem or a lai or a lyric poem? Or
a tragedy (drama)? This information will be in the introduction. Be clear on
who the main characters are and the actions they take and the meaning behind
their choices. Be aware of how the characters may represent the society in
which they live.
There will be
objective questions regarding factual detail from the assignments intended for
you to “prove” that you actually read the work, such as matching sections over
themes, topics, terms, and characters and short answer over terms in relation
to the works.
There will be
subjective questions requiring you to demonstrate your ability to think
critically about the work and draw conclusions, very difficult if one has read
a synopsis rather than the work itself. These short essay questions may require
you to use terms, relate works, indicate myth or cultural values, etc.
Annotate in
your text as you read and/or keep careful notes throughout the course on your
reading. Discuss with a classmate. Consult Class Notes for additional
information and study guides. Be thoroughly familiar with your text as it has
additional information, such as the chronology section.
The tests must
be taken at a campus, not a center. After you take a test, it will be several days before I receive and grade it. I know many of you may be anxious, but do not
contact me for your grade; please wait for me to send it. Each test will be
100 points. (see syllabus). Take nothing in with you to test except a pen; scholastic dishonesty will result in an F in the course.
