An ACC Photographic Technology Department Capstone Experience
PHTC Portfolio Development Class
associated with the
Texas Professional Photographers Association, Summer Seminar
Once again advanced students of Austin Community College’s professional photography program competed with working photographers from Texas and several adjacent states. Our department has done this for 18 years as a recognized “Capstone Experience”, contributing importantly to our “Workforce Training”.
Lynn Jones has led this experiential adjunct to ACC’s training since 1991with the ably partnership of Prof. Kathryn Watts-Martinez over the past 7 years. We would be remiss if not congratulating the contributions of Dean, Gary Hampton, Dept. Chair, Bill Woodhull and our many fellow instructors who brought together the skills needed to take part in this exercise.
Our Students won many awards including plaques, distinguished print ribbons, and a judge’s choice award. The highest scoring prints were exhibited in a large gallery show of which 25% were ACC students. The photograph’s makers are totally anonymous when being scored by the Professional Photographers Assn. qualified judges and they do not know which prints are from students, working professionals, or “Masters of Photography”.
This three and one half day mini-convention produces many opportunities for training and education. Our students were required to attend judging and at least two training sessions. Through Kathryn’s good efforts we were also able to get three judges to discuss competitive print quality and to do personal critiques for one or more of the student’s photographs while considering their strengths and weaknesses. Included in the critiques were highly honored photographer/judges, Jenny Hollis and Richard Sturdevant, who between them, have had 5 - 100 point prints (for comparison, 80 points is considered “Master Level” or merit prints). Richard had two100’s in the same competition, an achievement never before accomplished in the TPPA or the PPA International. Richard and Jenny were kind enough to spend over 5 hours with our students. All of our students had at least one 80 point merit print, while several had more than one.
