1. Portfolios are based on academic years. If you are scheduled for a first year portfolio it will cover Fall, 2007, Spring 2008, and Summer 2008. If you are scheduled for a second year portfolio it will cover from Fall, 2006 through Summer, 2008, and if you are scheduled for a 3rd year portfolio it will cover Fall, 2005 through Summer, 2008.
2. Documents are submitted on a per course basis. For example, if you’ve taught PHYS 1401 ten times in the last 3 years, you only need submit one set of course documents for PHYS 1401.
3. You should submit a complete set of course documents for each course (not section). For example if you taught 3 sections of ENVR 1301, 2 sections of GEOL 1305, and one section of GEOL 1403 during the time period covered by the portfolio, you would submit one set of course documents for ENVR 1301, one set for GEOL 1305, and one set for GEOL 1403.
4. First year portfolios need to include only a complete set of course documents for each course taught.
5. A complete set of course documents includes for each course
6. 2nd year portfolios include the course documents and a statement of teaching philosophy. The teaching philosophy is a broad perspective about what you are trying to accomplish as a teacher. According to the Faculty Evaluation Office’s procedures manual, it is intended to force instructors to “think about such issues such as the overall objectives of their teaching and the broad objectives they want students to learn from their courses. At the most fundamental level, instructors need to express what they do as teachers and why.”
7. 3rd year portfolios are the same as second year portfolios but also include a course commentary. The course commentary is a description for a single course (of your choosing) of how you try to implement your teaching philosophy in that course. For example, a teaching philosophy might include a statement “I employ active learning strategies.” A course commentary might then include the statement “I incorporate active learning in PHYS 1401 by having my students break into small groups and works problems on a daily basis.”
