Racial Profiling FAQs

The Austin Community College Police Department has an established policy strictly prohibiting racial profiling in accordance with state and federal law. This policy is strictly enforced, and the department will take immediate and appropriate action to investigate any allegations of racial profiling. The policy applies to all members of the department, both commissioned and non-commissioned.

Q.   What is Racial Profiling?

Racial profiling means a law enforcement initiated action based on an individual’s race, ethnicity, or national origin rather than on the individual’s behavior or on information identifying the individual as having engaged in criminal activity.

Q.   What is the complaint process?

The department will accept complaints from any person who believes that they were stopped, searched, inappropriately ticketed, or arrested based on racial, ethnic, or national origin profiling. No person shall be discouraged, intimidated, or otherwise impeded from filing a complaint concerning racial profiling.

Q.   How do I make a complaint?

Complaints against members of the ACC Campus Police may be made to the on-duty Police Supervisor. The contacted supervisor will inform the complainant of the proper procedure for filing the complaint.

Q.   What happens to my complaint after it is received?

All complaints are investigated to determine the nature of the allegation, the type of allegation, and the facts surrounding the allegation. An investigation report will be forwarded to the Chief of Police for final evaluation of the complaint and determination of any corrective action as necessary.
