Is Math for Business and Economics right for me?

Math for Business and Economics is a college-level math course demanding college-level work. Success in this course will require that you already possess certain algebra skills, and that is the reason for the prerequisite: a current knowledge of second-year high school algebra.

Unfortunately, some students who meet the formal prerequisite still experience difficulty with Math for Business and Economics.  This is usually due to the fact that previous math training occurred too long ago and needs to be refreshed.  The Prerequisite Review can reveal whether or not this has occurred.  If I find that this is the case for you, I will strongly recommend that you first refresh your math skills by taking Intermediate Algebra (MATD 0390) before embarking on Math for Business and Economics. Please go to the Math Office (NRG 2221) for further advice on this.

How can I switch if I discover that Math for Business and Economics is not right for me?

Follow the directions given in the ACC Course Schedule, which describes how to make changes by telephone through a certain date.  After that, you may go to the Math Office (NRG 2221) to request a different course.  Please see me for the form to use.

Directions for the Prerequisite Review

You should, with little difficulty, be able to do at least 12 of the following 15 problems.  If, as you work these problems, it becomes clear to you (even today!) that further preparation will be needed,

don’t wait -- arrange immediately to switch to a different course!

Otherwise:

• Complete the test by next class period (beginning of class).
• Use whatever resources you need -- the amount of extra work it takes to complete this test will be a measure of the amount of extra work that will be  required by this course
• I will collect it next time, grade it, and return it to you at the following class session.  Your grade on this test will count. 
• Please note that if you wait until you receive a grade before you decide whether or not to remain, (1) the official drop/add period will have expired, and you will be able to switch only to a developmental (non-credit) math course, and (2) you will be behind one week already in your new class!
• If you want to know your grade on this test on the same day you turn it in, send me e-mail (today), and I will e-mail you back as soon as I have graded it.  You can then make appropriate plans in a timely fashion.

Score	Advice
12-15	Math for Business and Economics appears to be appropriate for you.  It will, however, require that you set aside at least 8 hours of time outside the classroom per week to prepare for lessons and do the required homework.  If difficulties arise, you may need to seek extra help from me or tutors in the Learning Lab.
8-11	Math for Business and Economics may not be appropriate for you.  If you stay enrolled, you will probably need frequent extra help from the tutors.  Please consider the Alternate Plan.
0-7	Math for Business and Economics appears to be inappropriate for you at this time.  You should receive advising by me or the Math Office (NRG 2221) before deciding to remain in this course.  I strongly recommend that you follow the Alternate Plan.
0-7	You have failed the Prerequisite Review, and I am unable to confirm that you have the prerequisite for this course.  Before our next class session, please go to Advising to obtain documented proof of prerequisite.  If you fail to do this, you will (regrettably) be dropped at that time.

Alternate plan:  Take or re-take Intermediate Algebra (MATD 0390), if Math for Business and Economics is a strict requirement for your degree program.  Although you may consider re-taking Intermediate Algebra to be a waste of time, it will save you time in the long run, because it will prepare you for a fulfilling, rather than a frustrating (and possibly failing) experience with Math for Business and Economics.

Please follow the directions given in the ACC Course Schedule, which describes how to make changes by telephone through a certain date.  If you wish to make a change after that date, please take the form Developmental Mathematics level change form (obtainable from me) to the Math Office (NRG 2221) to request a different course.
