Early warning!

Dear student,

We are still in the beginning days of our course, but already it appears to me that College Algebra is probably not a good course for you, based on the following:

__  current homework missing and/or below a minimal College Algebra level
__  Prerequisite Review score
__  C in Intermediate Algebra (in order to go on in algebra, you need an A or B)
___ you qualify via TASP, SAT, or ACT.  These are not good algebra placement tests.

History shows that students in these categories have only a slim chance of passing College Algebra.  I cannot, in good conscience, allow you to proceed inevitably to an F or W without getting your attention concerning this matter.  That would constitute an “F” for me!

See below for an action plan that may get you back on track toward a math experience that will eventually lead to success in College Algebra.

If you remain in this course and your work continues to fall short of a minimal College Algebra standard, I will avert an almost certain catastrophe for you and me by issuing a drop (code 29, “lack of progress”) on or before ________________________.  This will result in no grade of any kind for the course.

Please feel free to consult a math advisor about this, and ask him/her to get in touch with me.  You can do this by going to the Math Office (2221) and asking to see an advisor.

Hoping for a successful math experience for you,
Dr. Philip Owens      powens@austincc.edu

Getting back on track:

You have two alternatives:

(1)  Switch to Intermediate Algebra.   It’s not too late to do this.  See me for the form.

(2)  Redo the Prerequisite Review as many times as it takes to raise your score to 12

       and

Raise all Part B  HW for Chapter 1 to a grade of 15 = 75% (by redoing, if necessary)

If you fail to do (1) or (2) you may be dropped by the stated drop date.
