TEXTBOOK:

¿Qué Tal? fourth edition, Workbook and Lab Book

We will cover chapters 11 through 21 in Spanish II. There will be four chapter tests and a comprehensive final exam as well as an oral exam at the end of the semester. In addition you will do an oral presentation and write 3 in-class compositions. The lab exercises in the Lab Book are required. You may listen to the tapes in the library or buy one or two blank cassettes (90 minutes, good quality, but not chrome or metal) and copy the master tape on the equipment in the library to listen to them at home. One lesson should fit on a cassette and you can erase and re-copy new lessons as the course progresses.

PREREQUISITES:

Students must have successfully completed a college level course of Spanish I with a letter grade of C or better. You must provide the professor with proof of completion of this course the first week of class. Students who do not provide proof (transcript, grade report, etc.) may be dropped from this course.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance is important in a language class. You must be present in the class in order to participate in the class activities and to practice the Spanish you have learned. A class participation grade is part of your final grade. You are allowed 2 unexcused absences. I take roll and if your attendance impairs your progress in class your grade may suffer.

IMPORTANT!!! If you decide to drop this class, YOU and only YOU are responsible for doing the paperwork. If you do not fill out the appropriate forms to officially drop, you will run the risk of making an F in this class. I will not drop you when you suddenly stop coming to class. Remember it is your responsibility!! Last day to drop is July .

Lab Work:

You are required to listen to the Lab tapes and do the exercises in the Lab book. You will need to copy the master tapes and listen to the tapes at home or in the learning resource center (library). I will collect the lab books on the day of the exams and check your work for the chapters which the exam covers.

WORKBOOKS:

To receive the most benefit from the workbooks, the exercises should be done for each chapter as we cover the material in class.....before the tests. After doing the exercises use the answer key in the back of the workbook to check your answers and correct any mistakes. In this way you will learn what you are having trouble with or do not understand before the exams....which I’ve always thought was a pretty good idea!! You will have 11 short quizzes (10 to 15 minutes) over each chapter from the workbook which will be your Workbook grade. The quiz will be given at the end of class after each chapter is completed. You may drop your lowest quiz grade at the end of the semester. I generally do not give make-up WB quizzes. The workbooks are intended to reinforce and review what is covered in the book and in class and will help you on the exams.

EXAMS:

There will be 4 chapter exams and a comprehensive final exam. Summer classes move quickly so there will be an exam every week after the first week. If you miss an exam for a valid reason such as a major illness or family emergency I will consider giving a make-up exam. However, in the event that you cannot take a test, you must notify me beforehand. I have an answering machine for messages and you may leave messages for me on my voice mail at ACC or in my mailbox at ACC. If you do not show up for the exam and have not attempted to let me know ahead of time you will not be able to take the make-up.

ORAL EXAMS:

We will be doing more speaking in class for Spanish II than in Spanish I. You will do a short oral dialogue with a partner in front of the class in the fourth week and there will be an oral exam at the end of the semester. The final oral exam will be an interview format with the professor on a chosen topic from the textbook or a related personal topic. You will receive more information on the two oral activities later in the semester.

STUDY SUGGESTIONS:

I expect you to read your daily assignment in the book before coming to class and to listen to the lab tapes.... without being told to do so every day. Class time is for practicing what you study at home and clarifying anything you do not understand. I generally do not do extensive grammar explanations in class. It is all in the book and I expect you to read it before class. Listen to the tapes with each chapter we cover, especially on days that you do not come to class so that you have some input of Spanish every day. During class...... PARTICIPATE!!! Answer questions and listen to other students’ responses. Don’t be afraid to answer or ask questions. I will not intentionally embarrass you. If you do not understand something, it is possible that someone else has the same question and we will all benefit from your question. Mistakes are OK. We all make them and hopefully learn by them. You cannot cram for a foreign language class or test. You should study at least 1 hour minimum every day reading the book, reviewing grammar and vocabulary. Learning a language takes lots of practice, reading the book, and doing the exercises. Looking at your book 10 minutes before class is not the way to learn a language.

Spanish is a beautiful language and I love to teach it. Learning a language can be fun and I know that if we work together we can have a very enjoyable class.
