Deactivation Plan

After careful review of student enrollments and cumulative graduates, it has become apparent that the Quality Assurance
Program under the Business Studies Area does not meet the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) standards
 for student completion rate.

In light of these findings, and after working with the program faculty and the Advisory Committee, the Dean of Business
Studies is recommending the deactivation of the Quality Assurance program effective Spring 2003.  Guidelines for Program
Deactivation are defined by the THEBC as follows:

"An institution may deactivate a program by suspending new student enrollment and submitting a notice of program
deactivation to the Coordinating Board using the Program Revision Form.  Institutions should have on file and
available for Coordinating Board review provisions for teaching out currently enrolled students.

A program may remain deactivated no longer than three academic years.  The institution must either reactivate or close
the program at the end of the third year.  A program not reactivated or closed by the institution will be closed by the
Coordinating Board after the three-year time period has lapsed."

The "Teach Out Plan" involves:
  • Notifying students in writing of the decision to deactivate the Quality Assurance Program and recommending that all students who have declared this major meet with a faculty member or the Dean of Business Studies, Val Cantu, 223-8124.
  • Working with students affected to modify their degree plans as appropriate.
  • Giving currently enrolled students up to three years from the date of "Deactivation" to complete program requirements.  This time period ends August 2006.
  • Allowing students who wish to graduate with either a 2-year degree in Quality Management Technology or a Certificate in Quality Technology Management to substitute required and elected QUA courses as approved by the Dean of Business Studies.
  • Allowing students to receive college credit for approved QUA Continuing Education courses taken alone or in   combination totaling 48 clock hours, which meet the stated learning objectives for QUA College credit courses meeting   degree requirements.
  • Making a list of approved QUA Continuing Education courses and their equivalent college credit courses available to students affected by this decision.

After the three-year deactivation period, ending August 2006, the Quality Assurance Program will be officially closed unless there is sufficient evidence to reactivate the program.  Students with questions or concerns should be directed to the Office of the Dean of Business Studies, (512) 223-8124.
