I.      Course description:

 

This course is a survey course. It lays a foundation by discussing computing terminology, components, software, programming concepts, the world wide web, ethics and the computer's integration into business activities.  Laboratory experience includes Windows, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Presentations using either Power Point or a Web Page are required.

 

 II.      Course objectives: To:

 

A.    Be able to understand what is being written about computer technology.

B.     Understand what a computer program is, and to distinguish between the different types of software.

C.     Understand the Internet and World Wide Web.

D.  Understand in general what a computer is, and what it can and cannot do.

E.    Have a general understanding of system analysis and design.

F.   Become familiar with the most popular personal computer software packages.

G.   Learn to express yourself using Microsoft Office software

 

III.      Course materials:

 

(1)   Text-Understanding Computers: Today and Tomorrow, 2002 Edition by Charles Parker & Deborah Morley.

(2)   Lab-Microsoft Office XP Brief Concepts and Techniques by Shelly, Cashman, and Vermaat.

(3)   Two floppy diskettes or one zip diskette.

 IV.       Course Requirements:

 

A.     Class attendance - Students are expected to attend all classes. If the student misses a class or is tardy, it is the student's responsibility to get assignments and missed material.

 

B.     Lab attendance - Lab attendance is required unless authorized by the  instructor.

 

C.     Lab assignments - During the semester you will be given lab assignments related to Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office XP. Each assignment is due at the end of the testing period for that subject. In addition you will be expected to prepare an original presentation.

 

D.     Lab grading – only half credit will be given for late assignments. No credit will be given for assignments over 1 week late or for assignments submitted after the last day of class. Students are strongly encouraged to turn in each assignment as soon as it is completed. Negative points will result if a lab topic is not attempted.

 

E.      Copying someone else's work is not allowed. If the instructor determines that work has been copied, disciplinary action will result which could include referral to the College Dean.

 

V.           Examinations:

 

Four major examinations and one major presentation will be given during the semester.  If you miss an exam, a make-up exam will be given for excused absences only.  Contact the instructor before or immediately after the emergency that causes you to miss the exam to arrange for a make-up.  Graded examinations will be kept on file by the instructor. Exams will be reviewed during the class immediately following the test and/or by appointment.

Eagle HS will be celebrating their 25th reunion this year. Prepare an attractive 1 page announcement to be sent to class members. Include a graphic of the school’s mascot, an eagle. The reunion will be held at Fisher Country Club and will feature live entertainment by the Jazzicians, a local band. The reunion will be held on Saturday, October 27. Doors open at 6:00 PM with dinner at 7:00PM, followed by entertainment from 8:00 PM to 11:00PM. Cost is $50 per person. It will be an opportunity to reminisce about old times, catch up with old friends and share future plans. More information can be obtained by calling Sue Nordic at 555-9808. Use the concepts and techniques you have learned so far to complete this assignment. Make good use of  white” space, and consider using bullets and/or word art.

You can use either Front Page Express or PowerPoint as your presentation software. The presentation can be done either individually or in a 2 man team. The presentation should be based upon either:

You are encouraged to choose your own topic for approval by the instructor.

 

Standards for grading will be explained in class, but include Content (4), Organization (4), Use of software features (5) and Presentation skills (4).
