Internships

There are many advantages to participating in an internship, such as gaining "real world" work experience and employment networking contacts. A recent survey of the nation's 1000 largest companies on hiring college graduates, found that "experience in the profession, such as internships or temporary work" was more than twice as important as any of the other factors they considered in hiring. In both of the RTF workforce certificate programs, the capstone experience is the internship class (RTVB 2388). Associates degree students who meet the requirements may also take the internship class for workforce certificate credit only.

The internship class combines theory and practice through a training experience in the workplace. This workforce training should be related to an area of student career interest, connecting general and technical skills to real world experience. Internships can be set up with a variety of media companies, such as radio and television stations, film, video, governmental agencies or new media production companies.

How the Internship Class Works

  1. At least a month before the semester begins, students contact instructor with information about where they are interning. For students who would like recommendations, contact with the instructor should be made months in advance, since that is when companies look for interns.
  2. Student emails or calls companies to set up interviews, then accepts or rejects specific offers.
  3. Once an internship has been confirmed, students are approved by instructor to register for the class.
  4. When the semester begins, Students follow the syllabus schedule (see current syllabus), which includes a meeting, readings, regular hours interning at company, and emailed correspondence with instructor in the form of journal entries reflecting on their experience.
  5. All interns are required to set up a meeting with their instructor by the end of the first week of the semester. This could be individually or in a small group with other students.

A representative from the sponsoring company serves as the student's immediate supervisor in the work setting.

Students typically work 12-18 hrs/week following the ACC academic calendar.

Students submit their weekly journal/progress report via email, as instructor guides and gives students feedback as needed.

Throughout the semester, students submit materials as described in the syllabus, to include a resume, journals, midterms and finals, and final printed out journal report.
