The social and behavioral sciences make up an essential part of ACC's core curriculum, and the purpose of the core curriculum is to provide the knowledge, skills, and perspectives that help define the educated person. The purpose of the social and behavioral sciences is to increase students' knowledge of how social and behavioral scientists discover, describe, and explain the behaviors and interactions among individuals, groups, institutions, events, and ideas. Such knowledge will better equip students to understand themselves and the roles they play in addressing the issues facing humanity.

Service Learning?

Though there are many definitions of service learning, here is one that is commonly used:  Service learning may be defined as a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of the course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility (Bringle and Hatcher, 1995).

Service Learning is a method which promotes student learning and development through participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences. These experiences are defined, planned, implemented, and coordinated collaboratively by students, faculty, and the community. Service earning activities may be incorporated into any existing course.  The common thread in all service learning definitions is service and reflection connected to academic coursework..Read More

El Centro- Project One-to-One

Project One-to-One is a mentorship program for ACC students interested in legal careers, who have been historically under-represented in the legal professions or in law schools. The purpose of the program is to provide these students with mentors from the legal community, as well as career counseling, educational planning, academic advising, and paid internships during their academic years, as they pursue careers in law. The program is administered by the Texas Appleseed foundation with the support of the Latino/Latin American Studies Center ("El Centro") at ACC.

students may be able to obtain paid summer internships at law firms. The program was developed by Professor Terry Perrin, then-Associate Director of El Centro for Texas Appleseed.
