INTERNET DISCUSSION GROUPS

Students are invited to participate in email discussions of the topics covered in the ECON 2301 (Macroeconomics) course. If you are having problems understanding any of the material covered in the course, you can post a message to a list of other students in (and the professor of) the course. One of the students on the list or the professor will then reply to your query. We will do this through a listserv.

Listserve:

A listserv is a mailing list that uses specialized software. Members "join" the list (think about subscribing to a magazine). When a message is mailed to the list, each member of the list receives the message. (This is compared to a magazine being printed and each subscriber receiving a copy of the magazine.)

It is highly recommended that you subscribe to the class listserv so that you will receive all correspondence that is sent to that listserv. To subscribe you send an email message to the host server at ACC (listserv@austin.cc.tx.us).

The following is how the message should look for students in the 16 week semester:

************************************************************************************

TO: listserv@austin.cc.tx.us

CC: jamesesondgeroth@yahoo.com

SUBJECT: subscribe to ACCMACRO1

SUBscribe ACCMACRO1 your name

************************************************************************************

The following is how the message should look for students in the 12 week semester:

************************************************************************************

TO: listserv@austin.cc.tx.us

CC: james_sondgeroth@yahoo.com

SUBJECT: subscribe to itvmacro_12w_l

SUBscribe itvmacro_12w_l

************************************************************************************

You should receive a message confirming that you have subscribed.

Caution! If you do not receive confirmation that you subscribed, CHECK SPELLING!!!

After you have subscribed, you can send messages for discussion, information, or help to ACCMACRO1@austin.cc.tx.us

The following is an example of such a message:

************************************************************************************

TO: ACCMACRO1@austincc.edu (16 week semester) OR itvmacro_12w_l@austincc.edu (12 week semester)

CC:

SUBJECT: GDP

In problem 2 of the Study Guide on page 58, how did they know to add up the items they did on page 63 where the answer is given? Where is this covered in the textbook?

ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

If you do not have an internet connection at your home, all ACC libraries have rooms full of computers that have access to the internet that you can use. All of the Austin Public Libraries also have computers connected to the internet that you can use.

FREE E-MAIL INFO

There are some free email services offered to Internet users. Some require software provided by the provider and some just require you have access to the World Wide Web.

For a list of free providers visit http://www.emailaddresses.com.

You may consider using a free service if you do not have an e-mail account right now or if you want to keep your class email separate from your work or personal email.

Below are a few popular free services that just require you have access to the World Wide Web.

Hotmail: Found at http://www.hotmail.com

Yahoo Mail: Found at http://www.yahoo.com

Altavista Mail: Found at http://www.altavista.com

HOW TO LEAVE THE LIST

You can leave the list at any time by sending a SIGNOFF command to the host server (in this case, LISTSERV@austin.cc.tx.us):

signoff ACCMACRO1

Note: I will use itvmacro_12w_l as the listserv name for the 12 week semesters in the fall and spring and the 11 week session in the summer

LISTSERV does not need your name for a signoff command, so there is no need to type it. Do not hesitate to subscribe to a list to see what it is really about, and then sign off a couple days later if it turns out not to be what you expected. Most list owners are used to that and will not be hurt or angry.

The Basic User's Guide to LISTSERV* can be found at:
