FAQ's for Hybrid Classroom (HYC) Courses
How do I enroll in a Speech course? All enrollment is handled by the ACC Admissions & Records office, regardless of the type of course. Once you have completed the admission process, you may register online, on campus, or by phone. You may find the instructions for registering online useful. Current course schedules are available at all campuses and online. Can I take any Speech course to fulfill my degree requirements? You'll want to check your degree plan to determine which Speech course you should take. If your degree plan says to select from the General Education or Core Curriculum courses, you will choose one of the following courses: SPCH 1311 (Introduction to Speech Communication), SPCH 1315 (Public Speaking), SPCH 1318 (Interpersonal Communication), or SPCH 1321 (Business and Professional Communication). I want to enroll in a section that is full. How can I add this section? If a section has reached the enrollment limit, you will not be able to add this section unless a seat opens up. During registration periods, you might check the enrollment after payment deadlines; anyone who misses the payment deadline is dropped from the course. Frequently Asked Questions for Distance Learning Courses (PCM and HYD) How does a distance learning course in Speech work? A Speech distance learning course is taught primarily online, using computer-based learning. Distance learning courses work best for students who enjoy active, autonomous learning. Most distance learning Speech courses require some online meetings throughout the term. These courses are classified as HYD (Hybrid-Distance Learning) courses. SPCH 1318, Interpersonal Communication, is the only Speech course taught as a PCM (Personal Computer with Modem) course. This course does not require onsite meetings; all major assignments will be completed online. Why do some Speech Distance Learning classes have onsite meetings? Because of the nature of a Speech course, we hold onsite meetings to submit major assignments and/or to present major presentations. Do I have to go to onsite meetings for the HYD course I'm enrolled in? Yes. The onsite meetings for HYD courses are mandatory. If you miss an onsite meeting, you will not be allowed to continue in the course and should withdraw. If I'm enrolled in a HYD section, how many meetings will I attend? The number of meetings varies by the course in which you're enrolled and is determined by the instructor. Please see the course notes (in the course schedule) and/or instructor's website for information about the number of meetings your course will have. You can also find information about the dates, times, and locations of the meetings in the course notes and/or instructor's website. I can't make it to one of the meetings for the HYD course that I registered for. What can I do? The onsite meetings for the HYD courses are mandatory. If you cannot attend one of the meetings for the course that you registered for, you should drop that course. Are distance learning courses self-paced? No, though you may be able to work ahead of the course if you want. All assignments will have deadlines, and while you may work from your computer at your convenience, you will be expected to keep up with the class. All assignments and due dates will be listed on the Blackboard site and on the course schedule your instructor will provide during the orientation. You are responsible for knowing all due dates and submitting assignments on time! Frequently Asked Questions for Hybrid Classroom (HYC) Courses A hybrid course combines traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with online computer-based learning. This convenient format engages students in the active, autonomous learning process of an Internet-based PCM or HYD course while also providing regularly scheduled interaction with the course instructor. What is the difference between a hybrid course and an online course? A hybrid course meets onsite more often than an online course, and less of the work is completed online. How often will my section meet? A standard classroom Speech course meets for 1 hour and 15 minutes twice a week. A hybrid course meets only once a week, and there will be additional activities, usually web-based, in place of the other class meeting. When and where will my section meet? The meeting days, times, and locations for the classroom component are listed in the Course Schedule, just as with regular classroom courses. Class time will serve primarily as a lab. During class time, you will participate in class discussions, group activities, and deliver your oral presentations. Each individual instructor will have his or her own specific requirements, which will be discussed during the first class meeting. It is especially important that you attend the first class meeting. You will be using the Internet interface called Blackboard (or another course management system) for the online component of the course. On the Blackboard Web site, there will be links to online resources to help you understand and learn the course material. There will also be instructions for the assignments and oral presentations that you will be required to complete. Is the online work self-paced? Hybrid courses are not self-paced. All assignments will have deadlines, and while you may work from your computer at your convenience, you will be expected to keep up with the class. All assignments and due dates will be listed on the Blackboard site and on the course schedule your instructor will provide during the first class meeting. You are responsible for knowing all due dates and submitting assignments on time! |
