For Students New to Community College Expectations

* FERPA, ACC's application of that to high school students, and my own policy prevent discussions with parents. The exception is for arrangements of exams in case of emergency. In other words, I am not permitted to give out information about students to anyone. Even the youngest students should be encouraged to attempt to manage the negotiations of bureaucracy for themselves. However, if a student is in the hospital, he or she should request someone to let me know to arrange a make-up.

*Comportment (or how to act in a classroom)
Proper comportment includes not disrupting the class, not endangering anyone's safety, not being rude to anyone, and showing proper deference. We will talk about what deference is. It means showing proper respect. One must show a certain amount of respect to the person running the class, or else there will be no class, or there will be someone running it who doesn't know much about Sociology. Use proper ettiquette. Act like you are here to learn. For more information, please see documents on Blackboard about classroom comportment. Comportment expectations extend to office hours and all other times. Especially, do not act in a way so that other students cannot learn or someone's safety is endangered. For this, you will be dropped.

*Comparisons between Jr./Community College and other levels of schooling
Please see Blackboard for document comparing high school, community college, and senior university. In contrast to high school, there is no one watching out for you; instead you are treated like an adult and expected to take care of your time and grades yourself. Unlike senior university, this is not a strictly competitive environment. Help is available if you ask for it.

* Internet Resources (Blackboard has a more uptodate and fulsome list.
*"Gee, I studied hard and I'm failing; what can I do?"
*How to Use Office Hours

Academic help, such as study techniques and guidance in learning to write for college, is proferred repeatedly, explicitly, and continually during the term. No help is offered once grades are in. To ask for that kind of "help" is cheating. Please consult syllabus for my policy on cheating. Nor are arguments entertained at that point. Miscalculations, on the other hand, are cheerfully corrected if and when they are detected. Discussions of calculations, thanks, and requests for recommendations are the only conversations appropriate between the time the final is given and the grades being reported permanently in the college system.
