Austin Community College (ACC) is pleased to announce that it has been
selected by Gallaudet University to be the home of the Gallaudet
University Regional Center (GURC) for the Southwest Region. This
region includes Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico,
Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.
The Grand Opening ceremony took place on January 12, 2011 at ACC's
Riverside Campus. Honored speakers included Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow,
President / CEO of Austin Community College District, and Dr. T. Alan
Hurwitz, President of Gallaudet University.
The goal of the Gallaudet Regional Center is to provide a regional
connection to Gallaudet University, its educational programs, and its
community. The center will offer extension courses, training
workshops, and technical assistance to address the educational,
transition, and professional development needs of deaf and hard of
hearing people from birth through adulthood.
In partnership with Gallaudet University, GURCs offer courses for deaf
and hard of hearing people, their families, and the professionals who
work with them. Courses provide opportunities to study with recognized
experts in such fields as American Sign Language Linguistics, Deaf
Studies, Deaf Education, and Interpreting. These courses are provided
through the GURCs, often in collaboration with sponsoring agencies
serving deaf and hearing communities. Schools for deaf students,
special education school districts, interpreter training programs, or professional organizations can be sponsoring agencies.
GURC provides a variety of different professional development opportunities in partnership with others.
Every spring, Gallaudet University hosts the National Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School students.
