FOR MEMBERS
Dear TACWT members:
I attended my first TACWT conference in 1987. In 1987, economic despair had caused me to leave teaching (and writing), but that TACWT conference, with its sessions and conversations and camaraderie, reminded me of the excitement that comes from being a part of a community of writers and teachers of creative writing. That 1987 TACWT conference was one of a number of things that led me back to the literary path. So, now, nearly twenty years later, I am honored to serve as president of this long-standing organization. It occurs to me that I am probably the organization’s only “unelected” president, having assumed the office without a vote after hurricane Rita blew away our planned conference in San Antonio last September.
I’m pleased to report that, thanks to Terry Dalrymple and his colleagues at Angelo State University, we will resume our annual meetings this September 28-30 in San Angelo. I want to thank Jim Sanderson for his dedication to keeping this organization intact, despite his having to deal with a hurricane that forced him to flee his home last fall. My sincere thanks also go to Lyman Grant and his associates at Austin Community College for designing and posting a new website for TACWT. And we are indebted to Laura Payne Butler of Sul Ross State University for her help with our student writing competitions. Indeed, TACWT owes a round of applause to many others, especially those who met for a business meeting in Austin last March during the AWP conference and those who have renewed their memberships and plan to attend our meeting this September. It is a testament to the value of TACWT that so many people have worked so hard and so long to maintain this organization.
My ambitions as president are modest: collect dues, organize the conference program, and establish a directory of current members. I welcome your suggestions for promoting and improving our organization, and I look forward to seeing you in San Angelo this September.
