Student Portfolios
To complete their degrees and certificates, BTCM students create portfolios, preferably online like those listed below. These get searched by potential employers, and sometimes students get job offers.
Student Projects
The BTCM program covers online and print documentation skills, as well as technical editing, technical report writing, and grammar, copyediting, and proofreading skills for the professional writer. Students do their projects in HTML, RoboHelp, FrameMaker, and other mainstream applications. Some of these projects are team-based, simulating the development environment in industry. Listed here are some of their projects as selected by BTCM faculty:
- What You Own Home Inventory: User Guide. Developed by Joane Rylander (David McMurrey, instructor) using FrameMaker 10, summer 2010.
- FrameMaker 9 Tutorials. Used by students
in Technical Publishing with FrameMaker (David McMurrey, instructor), these tutorials were upgraded and improved by Jill Brockmann in the BTCM program at ACC. Previous versions have been revised and improved by Jana Owens, Thomas Moore, Pam Renwick, and Jacqueline Pulido.
- Desktop Messenger. Developed by Melanie Horwitz (David McMurrey, instructor) using RoboHelp HTML 7, fall 2008. (To view after you download, you may have to right-click the CHM file and select Properties > Unblock.)
- Mall Kiosk Procedure Manual. Developed by Susan E. Huckle (David McMurrey, instructor) using FrameMaker 7, fall 2006
- Arendar 2005 Report Utility User Manual. Developed by Amy Gelfand (David McMurrey, instructor) using FrameMaker 6, fall 2004
- Virus Protection with Outlook Express. Developed by Susan E. Huckle for IMED 1445 Multimedia 1, Bill Rainey, ACC instructor.
- LISTSERV Use Guide. Developed by Alicia Davis (Scott Mogull, instructor) using Microsoft Word 2002 in ETWR 2476 Book-Length Documents with MS Word, summer 2005
- FilePad Web Help. Developed by Jim Gillespie (David McMurrey, instructor) using direct HTML tags in ETWR 2473 XHTML and CSS for Information Specialists, spring 2003
- Ricoh AP505: Operating Instructions. Developed by Yvonne Borman (David McMurrey, instructor) using FrameMaker 7, spring 2005
