Teacher Education
Center for Teacher Certification Programs
Austin Community College's Center for Teacher Certification offers certification training for Math, Science, Bilingual EC-4 and 4-8, Special Education, and other certifications as requested by local school districts. The program begins in the fall with the next cohort of participants, offering: personal attention; hands-on, reality training in conjunction with theory and practice; research-based curriculum; instructors and supervisors who have teaching expertise; networking with school districts; and quick response to student concerns and needs. Apply and be accepted into a program that provides support for becoming an excellent teacher.

This program offers educational opportunities for current teachers and future teachers, such as those wanting to work with students in the classroom (ParaEducators and Substitute Teachers), certified teachers, and Child Care workers seeking additional professional development hours.

Mission Statement: We prepare teachers for the realities and rewards of the teaching profession by offering outstanding faculty and experienced teachers as facilitators. Curriculum guidelines and instruction prepare teachers for jobs and careers. We serve the greater Austin area and partner with school districts and state agencies to provide a quality workforce for the community.

The goals of a learner-centered program are:

  • Link theory to practice.
  • Develop awareness and skills of teaching as a reflective process.
  • Develop knowledge and skills of the teachers as decision-makers within a learner-centered educational community.
  • Develop proficiency in classroom management and assessment.
  • Develop, implement, and integrate pedagogy and content knowledge.
  • Exhibit professionalism among all participants in the school setting.
  • Develop a desire for lifelong learning.
  • Support beginning teachers in ways that encourage continuance in the profession

Ron BolekCongratulations to an Outstanding Principal! Ron Bolek, Wooten Principal, was nominated by ACC interns Alejandra Carrillo and Noelix Rivera.

He is outstanding because he shows passion for his work and he is a very hard worker.  Mr. Bolek has a high sense of responsibility towards children’s education.  As a principal he is supportive and encourages us to be the best teachers we can be.  His dedication is an example for anyone who gets the opportunity to work for him.  Mr. Bolek is a very caring person who helps others accomplish their success. It has been a wonderful experience working with him this past year.

Principal Ruth HarvinOutstanding Principal W. Ruth Harvin, Ed.D has three ACC interns at Winn Elementary. Imelda Hopps, Diana Martinez, and Blanca Puente all expressed appreciation for her support. Although our school is an "Academically Unacceptable" campus this year, Dr. Harvin has been providing us all the help and encouragement we require. Since it is our duty to perform with TAKS results, she sends us nice cards to encourage the teachers who have to "show their work" per se. This gives me a boost to do my job even better. Another one is that the students also feel encouraged because they give prizes to those who perform, extrinsic rewards like pencils, and intrinsic ones like public appraisal, etc. allow them to motivate themselves and try harder. There are many other great things this principal has done for us, at least for me, she is an admirable person and outstanding principal (Blanca Puente). Ms. Martinez comments that Ms. Harvin always gives me suppport with whatever I need. And Imelda Hopps insists that her principal provided her with all the resources needed during her interventions with students. She analyzed the weekly scores of the students and gave me feedback and advice.

Congratulations to our 7 AISD Teachers of Promise, representing 14 campuses: Olga Andreeva (Barrington Elementary), Tara Boyer(Dobie), Carmen Carrillo (Wooten), Imelda Hopps (Winn), Jim Johnson (ALC), Ivonne Rodriguez (Blackshear), and Rodrigo Rodriguez (Cook Elementary). Thanks also to their ACC supervisors, Jodie Leach and Joyce Hancock!

If you want to make a difference and serve your community, consider teaching. Our youth need positive role models, adults who care and will take children from reality to reaching their potential. Although teaching is a rigorous career, the enjoyment gained from seeing a child "get it" is a unique experience. Why Would I Teach?
