- Internship with an accredited school as a first year teacher of record
- EDTC 3004 Successful Teaching Practices
- EDTC 3005 Supporting the Teaching Experience
- Successful Internship with recommendation by campus principal, campus mentor, ACC Supervisor, ACC Director.
- Apply for Standard Certificate with SBEC.
Applicant Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a minimum of 2.5 GPA with 24 hours in content area. (Courses such as anthropology, finance and accounting, and ecology only count for 3 semester hours.) You can meet the coursework requirements by taking additional courses at ACC or passing the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests for those courses (www.collegeboard.com.) - For foreign transcripts, contact a vendor on the approved SBEC list.
- Passing the required State Content Exam.
- Valid email address and regular access to a computer.
- Characteristics of a successful teacher.
- American Citizenship or working VISA: If not an American citizen, an applicant for permanent status with an I-485 and Employment Authorization Document (EAD). See http://www.austincc.edu/internat/tuition.htm.
- Having a criminal history may keep you from employment. The Revised Texas Education Code 22.083 authorizes school districts to obtain criminal history information on every employee and candidate for employment.
- Observation requirements include field observations, 16 hours in the fall and 14 in the spring. Be sure that you have adequate time to visit schools and, preferably, tutor.
- Financial obligations must be paid by deadlines, including TExES exams to ETS, probationary/standard certification to SBEC, and all tuition and fees for ACC Continuing Education. There are loans available, but no federal funding or grants.
- If you have received your degree/s from another country, you must prove English proficiency PRIOR to admission to our program by either:
- Bachelor's degree or higher from a university in another country where English is the language of instruction OR
- Taking the TOEFL-IBT and passing it with a minimum score of 77 AND a minimum score of 26 on the speaking portion
A complete application must include all of the following:
- College Transcripts: Original, sealed, college transcripts sent to ACC with coursework, credit hours, overall GPA, and date of completion of your Bachelor's and/or Master's degree. Have transcripts sent to ACC Teacher Certification Coordinator, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road; Austin, TX 78752.
- References: Three references mailed to ACC from former/current employers (2) and people (1) who know of your teaching & leadership experience. (Use the attached form on the application.)
- English Proficiency: For applicants from foreign countries, a passing grade on the TOEFL. We also suggest testing through ACC's ESL department and taking additional ESL courses for better English proficiency.
- Interview: Program Coordinator will arrange an interview when application is complete and nonrefundable fee paid.
- Resume: Submit a one-page resume listing any experiences in teaching children or work that would enhance teaching children. [Sample below.]
- Submit and Sign: Candidate Agreement and ACC Policies, Procedures, Rules and Regulations included in application.
