ANNOUCEMENT for SPED Candidates from SBEC-

As you may be aware, a recent interpretation of §232.4(c)(8) required the special education certification exam and a content area certification exam to be eligible for the issuance of a probationary certificate when assigned to teach in any special education assignment.

After further review and in consultation with the TEA Division of NCLB, effective immediately, the content area examination is only required when the teacher/intern is assigned to teach a core academic subject in the special education assignment. The term “core academic subject” is defined as English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages (languages other than English), civics and government, economics, arts (music, art, theatre, and dance), history and geography.

The current language in the rule will be revised to add specificity, and it will be presented to the State Board for Educator Certification for approval and adoption in the near future.
