Teacher Induction

“Give a man a fish and he eats for one day; teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime.”

The Center for Teacher Certification Program at Austin Community College is dedicated to the mission of bringing qualified teachers to the local schools.  We are committed to the tremendous impact that educators have on our children and to the future growth and development of education professionals who choose to bear this special responsibility.  As a result, we are proud to have established an induction program that facilitates the successful entrance of these individuals into a community of educators.  You are a member of this induction team that includes the intern teacher, mentor teacher, supervisor, office support, face-to-face classroom, and online support system.

To induct refers to the formal and often ritualistic socialization of new teachers.  In the past, this experience was likened to the phrase “baptism by fire,” where the new teacher was given a classroom, a set of textbooks, a group of students and told, “Go and teach.”

The face of the public school classroom and the role of the teacher have become so varied and complex that teachers need a formal induction process, a system for hands-on learning of the realities of the public school classroom, and a network for support.  As research indicates, 95% of beginning teachers having this support in their initial years stay in teaching after three years (Wilkinson, 1994).

The Induction Program for new teachers is committed to establishing a culture of support needed to ensure that our new teachers will be lifetime educators.  We use a model based on the Texas Beginning Educator Support System (TxBESS), a proven mentoring program designed to assist the new teacher through reflection and coaching with a trained mentor.  Thank you for being a mentor for our intern.  By assisting a new teacher to immediately find a place and to successfully teach students, you are not only supporting but also influencing the intern's new teaching career.
