7.  STANDARD WIRING POLICY VOICE, DATA and CATV

The Standard Wiring Policy is mandatory for all College renovations and new buildings. This policy also governs all off-campus sites. The policy is structured to meet the majority of telephony and data communication protocols presently utilized on the ACC campus. The purpose of this policy is to follow industry standards as they evolve and place the entire campus on a standard wiring scheme to increase flexibility for moves and changes within the College.

Specifications:
  • The Contractor will supply all cable.
  • The Contractor is responsible for estimating cable footage and the pulling of cable from the main telecommunications closets up the riser to the telecommunication closets and throughout the building to each outlet.
  • Apply no more than 25 pounds of pulling pressure on cable when installed.
  • Contractor shall provide and install machine-generated identification markers on all outlets, cables, connecting blocks, patch panels, fiber housing, conduits, cabinet and racks. Labeling convention must be EIA/TIA 606 compliant.

It is important to note that for every information outlets (IO) location a quad electrical outlet should be co-located. This is to ensure that adequate power is available for the end users phone and data equipment.

The following table outlines the voice and data cables, patch cords and jack color requirements:

7.1 Horizontal Wiring

7.1.1 Building Standard Information Outlet

Specifications:
  • The standard wiring for existing college buildings is a Category 5e Quad outlet system (2 voice / 2 data jacks) terminated on each IO. Quad outlets will be noted on the electrical drawings by a symbol. There is no deviation from this standard unless written approval is obtained from ACCNet Services.
  • New and some existing construction will include Category 6 Tri outlet system (1 voice/2 data jacks) terminated on each IO (See section 14 for new projects requirements).

7.1.2 Category 5e Wall Outlets

    • Wall outlets will contain enhanced Category 5e cable (excluding new construction which is Category 6). Wall outlets will be indicated on the electrical drawings by a symbol.
    • ADA requirements may dictate different wall phone heights in special construction circumstances such as wheelchair alcoves, columns and obstructions. Consult with the ACC Facilities Project Manager during the design stage.

7.1.3 Category 5e Voice Wiring Specifications

Specifications:
  • One (1) 4-pair enhanced Category 5e cables (Grey jacket) split termination on two (2) individual 568B RJ45 jacks (gray jacks with white quad face plates, if applicable ) .
  • Each run shall be continuous with no intermediate terminations. This will support any ACCNet Services equipment installed by ACCNet Services.

7.1.4 Category 5e Data Wiring Specifications

Specifications:
  • Two (2) 4-pair enhanced Category 5e cables (blue jacket) terminating on individual 8 position 568B RJ45/Category 5e data jacks (SYSTIMAX , White Quad Face Plate).
  • Runs shall be continuous with no intermediate terminations. A certified Category 5e tester will be used to perform certification test on all Cat. 5 or Cat 5e cabling installation. All test results must be provided to the ACCNet Project Manager.

7.2 Category 6 Wall Outlets

    • Wall outlets will contain Category 6 cable. Wall outlets will be indicated on the electrical drawings by a symbol.
    • ADA requirements may dictate different wall phone heights in special construction circumstances such as wheelchair alcoves, columns and obstructions. Consult with the ACC Facilities Project Manager or Technology Design Consultant during the design stage.

7.2.1 Category 6 Voice Wiring Specifications

Specifications:
  • One (1) 4-pair Category 6 cables (grey jacket) split termination on two (2) individual 568B RJ45 jacks (grey jacks with white quad face plates, if applicable) .
  • Each run shall be continuous with no intermediate terminations. This will support any ACCNet Services equipment installed by ACCNet Services.

7.2.2 Category 6 Data Wiring Specifications

Specifications:
  • Two (2) 4-pair Category 6 cables (blue jacket) terminating on individual 8 position 568B RJ45/Category 6 data jacks (SYSTIMAX , White Quad Face Plate).
  • Runs shall be continuous with no intermediate terminations. A certified Category 6 tester will be used to perform certification test on all Cat 6 cabling installation. All test results must be provided to the ACCNet Project Manager.

7.3 CATV Wiring Specifications

CATV wiring standard is separate for the ACCNet voice/data. For specific information on CATV requirements contact: Manager of Distance Learning at 223-8036.

7.4 Fiber Panels and Connectors

The main entry telecommunications closets will contain the fiber patch panels and optical converters and repeaters required for support of the campus fiber network. The main terminal may contain the fiber patch panels, bridges, and related equipment for coupling a building fiber network (Multi Mode Fiber) with the campus fiber backbone network (Single Mode Fiber). If required by the campus or building communications planning, a main terminal will contain patch bay or cross-connect facilities.
