HISTORY:  Book Report
                               
 

1.  OBJECTIVE:  The objective of the book report in this history 
 
course is to familiarize the student with historical research 
 
and writing through a structured exercise to be graded on the 
 
basis of the finished product.
 
 
 
2.  DESCRIPTION
 
        A.  DUE DATE:   Class meeting on Course Schedule.
 
        B.  LENGTH:  3 - 5 pages (not counting title page or bibliography)
 
        C.  STYLE:  Formal, typed or computer-printed, double space
               - no contractions, slang, abbreviations, misspelling, mark over
 
        D.  BINDING:  stapled or plastic spine (no dog-ears or ribbons)
 
 
 
3.  FORMAT
 
        A.  Title Page:  Includes Title, Student Name, History Course and 
 
Section Number, Austin Community College, and Date (Centered on page)
 
        B.  Text
 
               1. Introduction:  Your purpose and themes
 
                       - Author’s bio from Contemporary Authors or other index
 
                       - Author's Purpose
 
               2.  Main Themes:  give 2 examples of content for each theme
 
                3.  Conclusion
 
                       - Analysis
 
                       - Book Review from Book Review Digest or other source
 
                       - Your opinion
 
        C.  Footnotes:  3 footnotes min.
 
        - per Turabian, Manual for Writers, not MLA in-text (parenthesis) style
 
        - footnotes may be at bottom of page or endnotes at the end of the report
 
        D.  Bibliography:  3 sources minimum
 
        - may include source on author bio
 
        - may include book review source
 
        - may cite article from scholarly journal  
 
 
 
4.   REFERENCES:
 
A.  Topic:  The term paper is the report on the assigned book.
 
B.  Approval:  Students may choose any of the books on the reading 
 
list, but any book must be approved in advance by the instructor.
 
 
5.  PERSPECTIVE:  The term paper is written in the third person 
 
about the author of the book.  A book report describes the author's 
 
purpose, style, and arguments.  It concludes with a first-person 
 
evaluation of the book or author's writing.
 
 
 
EXAMPLE:
 
The Texas Republic  is a book by William Ransom Hogan about the 
 
culture in Texas.  Hogan's purpose is to describe society and 
 
culture in Texas history.  In the book, Hogan argues that...
