HIST 1302 Book Analysis Book List

By Subject Area

I update this list regularly, so check it just before you get ready to start your Book Analysis assignment.

These books are representative but certainly not exhaustive, of the period and topics covered in History 2.  These books have been chosen             because they fulfill one or more of the following criteria:

1. the book is considered a classic in its subject area;

2. students in the past have enjoyed the book and recommended it to others;

3. the book is suitable for the assignment; that is, it’ll enable you to thoughtfully & thoroughly answer the Book Analysis Assignment questions;

4. the book is thought-provoking; that is, it might be controversial in some respect, but in its controversy, it provokes thoughtful            consideration;

5. the book is of high academic quality; that is, it is well-researched, well-documented, and well-written;

6. the book is on a subject matter that may not be covered in-depth in your textbook, and so, it gives you an opportunity to learn more about a             particular subject;

7. most of the books are available locally - in and around Austin - at the ACC libraries, or at one of the other college/university libraries.

If you see a book you like, go to the website of a major bookseller like Amazon.com to see what the book is about – see if the book’s content    appeals to you.  If so, then try to find a copy available in a local library.  If you prefer to purchase the book, try a local used bookseller, such as         Half-Price Books.

Below are links to local academic libraries, where you should be able to find most of the books:

ACC students ARE allowed to check books out of other Texas public college/university libraries.  First, go to any ACC library and ask the librarian for a “Tex Share” card.  Once you get the Tex Share card, fill it out and bring it (along with your ACC ID) to the college/university library of your choice – and ask that college/university library for “borrowing privileges” at their library.  (The borrowing privileges will probably be good for one semester only and the library might charge you a nominal fee.)

For example, if you want borrowing privileges at UT-Austin, bring your Tex Share card and your ACC ID to the PCL (Perry-Castaneda) Library at 21st and Speedway on the UT campus. Just inside the front door is the borrowing desk – ask them where you can get a UT library card – they’ll direct you to the appropriate office – actually just a few steps away from the front desk. Once you get the UT-Austin library card, you can then check books out of the UT-Austin libraries.

The Tex Share card is good ONLY for PUBLIC college/universities in Texas (such as UT, Texas A&M and other community colleges in Texas) and may NOT be honored at private institutions, such as St. Ed’s or Concordia.  Check with THOSE institutions to see if they give borrower privileges to ACC students.
