Data Files

This page provides information on downloading the files you need to complete the Personal Computing course (COSC-1301).

You should download each 'File Set' individually and, to preclude any possible problems, place each set on a separate floppy disk.  That way you can work on a particular section of the book and have the appropriate data files available on one floppy disk. Each 'File Set' refers to a section within the book.  For instance, 'Word Files' refer to the 'Word' section of the book. These data files refer ONLY to book ISBN: 0-619-01896-8.

REMEMBER TO FORMAT YOUR FLOPPY DISK BEFORE YOU START THE DOWN LOAD! FLOPPY DISKS MUST BE 1.44Mb..

Please read all instructions before beginning!!!!!

Data files for work book.

2. The File Download window will open.  In this example, I selected PK270WSP.EXE, but you would choose from one of the above files.  See Figure 1.

Figure 1.

In this case, we are downloading PK207WSP.EXE.

3.  Click on 'Save this program to disk' and another screen will open to allow you to select the 'A' drive.  See Figure 2.

Figure 2.

Floppy disk is empty and ready to receive download.

Note:  The file will then be saved to the floppy disk.  Do this for each file you want. Although not necessary, you should for convenience save each file to a diffeent disk.

4.  When downloading is complete, use Windows Explorer and access the 'A' drive. In this example I downloaded the file 'unitd.EXE' from this page, saved it to the 'A' floppy and am now extracting it.  See Figure 3 for what the 'unitd.EXE' file would look like in the 'A' drive.

Figure 3.

unitd.EXE is now saved to the floppy disk.

5.   Right click on the Desktop and select New Folder. Type in 1301 and press enter. See Figure 4.

5.   Double-Click on the file name, and it will open a dialog box requesting a directory to extract the files to. Enter C:\windows\desktop\1301. Click OK and the files will be expanded. See Figure 5.

unitd.EXE is expanded.

6. The files are now ready for use with the appropriate section in the book.  In this example, the "unitd" files for the 'D' section in Word were downloaded to a floppy and extracted.  They are ready to use.

7. To open your files double-click on the folder named '1301' on your desktop.

For further information as to what files are needed for what section in the book, refer to page 'Project Files 17' at the rear of the work book. You do not need this file, but if you feel more comfortable with using it, download PKZIP from here.  This file is not needed to extract the individual files from any downloaded file.
