This is a PCM (Personal Computer with Modem) Course or Distance Learning Course.  This course is not like a traditional lecture course because you do not attend classes, this is a self directed course where you work at your own pace.  You will be given deadline dates.  There are NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS accepted, you will be allowed ONE extension for a test with 24 hours notice (see syllabus for further info).  We won’t be meeting in class; however, you MUST be able to take all tests at one of the ACC testing centers in and around the Austin area.  It is important that you are familiar with the internet, email, & most important is that you have access to a computer.  Your work & your communication will be done through phone & especially email, so it is imperative that you have direct access to a computer (preferably one at home) & that you know how to navigate through the web.

This course will require that you be responsible for keeping up with readings, the assignments & their deadlines, taking good notes, studying, & keeping in touch with me.  I am available to you through e-mail, phone calls, & if needed you may visit it me during the office hours.  However, you are responsible for initiating contact.

It would be of value for you to read through the technical skills needed to take this course which can be seen at http://www.austincc.edu/students/techcheck.htm.  You should also take a look at the Distance Learning Student Handbook, which will assist you with other information to decide if this is the right course for you, http://dl.austincc.edu/students/StudentHandbook.pdf.

BLACKBOARD.
We will be using Blackboard, http://www.acconline.austincc.edu/, for this course.  You should look at this website as soon as possible to become comfortable & familiar with it.  I would encourage you to first look at the  Student Guide.  The Student Guide will be listed when you go to the above website. There it will tell you how to log on.  The course can be found listed on Blackboard once the semester begins.

You must first log in at http://acconline.austincc.edu.  To log in you are to use your user name which is your ACC Online Services ID.  You can find this out by reviewing the “Student Guide” & clicking on “What’s My User ID?” Your password is your birthdate (mmddyy).  I will have your syllabus, assignments, discussion boards, announcements, and much more on blackboard.

When you first log on you must enter an up-to-date email address.  This is very important because this allows me to send emails to all students based on the email address provided in blackboard, & if you send me an email from the blackboard page I can not reply to it.

To add your email address go to the main Blackboard page for this class & click on “Tools” then click “Personal Information” and then “Edit Personal Information.” The only information I MUST have is a current email address.  This is one of the first things you MUST do because I use ONLY the email addresses on blackboard for contacting ALL students with just the click of the button.  If you contact me & tell me here’s my email address, that does me no good because with blackboard I just click on a class or individual student without having to save student’s email addresses in my personal contact folders (students change every semester, so it’s no feasible for me to do this).
