Patterns of Writing - Division:

For example, when you studied how to write an essay, the instructor probably taught the introductory paragraph by dividing it into its two key parts—the hook-lead and the thesis statement.  Below are some additional examples:

1. Physical Description
of a person, place, or thing

2. Analysis

Dental Hygiene Career

-professional development requirements
-negative factors

Texas History
-Spanish influence
-Mexican influence
-Confederate influence, and
-U.S. influence in shaping the history of the state.

To analyze is to separate the whole for the purpose of studying the parts. The goal is to understand how all the parts contribute to the whole.

When you are required to analyze a reading, make sure you understand the instructor’s assignment.

For English 1301 at ACC, you will be required to analyze a reading for purpose and pattern.

For English 1302 at ACC, you will be required to analyze a short story for central idea, character, conflict, point of view, setting, language, and tone.
