Anatomy and Physiology courses
Starting Fall 2004
Starting
in Fall 2004, the Biology Department will be changing the Anatomy and Physiology
courses offered at ACC in order to comply with the common course numbering
system of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
Effective fall 2004, BIOL 2401 A&P I will no longer be offered at ACC.
Students who have already taken BIOL 2401 A&P I at ACC through summer
2004 will have an opportunity to complete the sequence through the spring
semester of 2005. Sections of A&P II will be offered in fall 2004 and
spring 2005; these sections will be limited to people who have taken A&P
I at ACC.
For all other students, there will be two other sequences of courses that
are available. For students who require a one-semester introductory course,
BIOL 2404 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology will be offered. For students
who need a two-semester in-depth approach to anatomy and physiology, Human
Anatomy and Human Physiology will be offered. This two-semester sequence has
prerequisites before registration; please see below for the details. Students
should check with their programs of interest to see which course or courses
should be taken.
Effective fall 2004, BIOL 2404 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology will be offered. This will be a one-semester survey course taught specifically for allied health science programs who only require a one-semester course. There are no prerequisites for this course other than skill assessment G (reading, writing and math). This introductory course has both a lecture and lab component.
Effective fall 2004, Human Anatomy (BIOL 2304 lecture and
BIOL 2101 lab) will require passing an assessment test over high school biology
topics before a student will be able to register for the course. This assessment
test will cover high school level concepts of biology that directly related
to the course content for Human Anatomy. This is to ensure students have the
background knowledge necessary for success in the Human Anatomy course. Please
note: students must pass the assessment test to demonstrate knowledge. It
does not matter whether a student took high school biology or if they have
completed a college-level biology course or learned the material through self-study.
All students must take and pass the assessment exam before they will be allowed
to register for Human Anatomy.
Effective fall 2004, Human Physiology (BIOL 2305 lecture
and BIOL 2102 lab), will require passing an assessment test over high school
chemistry topics before a student will be allowed to register for the course.
This assessment test will cover high school level concepts of chemistry that
directly relate to the course content for Human Physiology. This is to ensure
students have the background knowledge necessary for success in the Human
Physiology course. Please note: students must pass the assessment test to
demonstrate knowledge. It does not matter whether a student took high school
chemistry or if they have completed a college-level chemistry course or learned
the material through self-study. All students must take and pass the assessment
exam before they will be allowed to register for Human Physiology.
Enrollment in the Human Anatomy and Human Physiology courses
will be restricted until a student passes the appropriate assessment test.
The tests will be given several times every semester at various ACC campuses.
Guidelines concerning the two assessment tests can be found at the home page
of the Biology Department at: www.austincc.edu/biology
Students may take the assessment tests at the Assessment Centers located on every campus. A schedule of available times is found at www.austincc.edu/biology/assessmentcenters. The Office
for Student Disabilities (OSD) will also offer separate testing times for
OSD students. Please read the guidelines carefully and bring all necessary
items.
On the day of the exam, students will fill out a form with
their mailing address. Once the assessment test has been graded, their score
will be recorded on the form and then mailed to them. Those who pass the exam
will subsequently have their registration for the course unblocked and will
be able to sign up for a section. Students who do not pass may not be allowed
to register for the course until they have successfully passed an assessment
test.
If a student does not pass the assessment test, he or she
may retake it. Depending on the student's score on the first assessment test,
the student may choose to self-study the information, take a Continuing Education
course over high school biology or high school chemistry offered by the Biology
Department to prepare students for the assessment tests or sign up for a college-level
biology class (either BIOL 1408 or BIOL 1406).
