Surgical Technology

From routine to life-saving medical procedures, Austin Community College’s Surgical Technology Program prepares you to assist in surgeries. You’ll learn the fundamentals of the surgical environment, surgical equipment preparations, handling specimens, and operating room procedures. Students can complete a certificate or associate degree to take the national certification exam.

  • Surgical Assistants

    Assist surgeons during surgery by performing duties such as tissue retraction, insertion of tubes and intravenous lines, or closure of surgical wounds. Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.

  • Surgical Technologists

    Assist in operations, under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. May help set up operating room, prepare and transport patients for surgery, adjust lights and equipment, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon's assistants, hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
