Try to avoid these common errors.

1) Commas and periods always go INSIDE quotation marks:

incorrect: Bill’s favorite expression is "full speed ahead".

correct: Bill’s favorite expression is "full speed ahead."

 

2) A dash is formed by typing two hyphens (Microsoft Word will automatically convert this into a dash):

Hyphen: The cupcakes were baked with forty-two pieces of semi-sweet chocolate.

Dash: The cupcakes—but not the brownies—were baked at 350 degrees.
