ACC honors Black History Month with a series of virtual events. Events are free and open to the community. Please check back here throughout the month as more events are added.

2021 Theme: The Future of Black America
This year’s Black History Month events at ACC will educate on those of past and present within black culture and empower a platform that will enrich and cultivate the future of Black America at Austin Community College District. Join us for timely & enlightening discussions on the future of Black America.

    • Kickback Black: Kicking off BHM, 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

      We are kicking off this year's celebration month by coming together and fellowshipping within a chill virtual lounge. We invite everyone in the community to bring their smile, wit, and their knowledge of Black history to this virtual lounge! 

      There will be networking opportunities, space to share personal experiences & thoughts on progression after 2020, and we will play a special Kahoot that is all about Black History!

    • Social Distancing Hour Discussion - The Future of Black America, How Do We Move On From Here?, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
      We invite everyone to join this timely & enlightening discussion on the future of Black America. We will explore the diaspora from all levels: ACC, the local Austin area, nationally, and globally; and address the inquiry of what we can do to move forward as a community after 2020. Let's have a tough conversation with civility, enjoy the new perspectives that others bring, be engaged, and be real.

    • Salon/Barbershop Talk: “Girrll” & “BRUH!”, 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.
      This event will focus on the identity development of the Black community, with a challenging conversation that aims to tackle various questions that have permeated throughout Black culture. Questions like "Who is missing in conversations about sexuality and politics within Black culture?" & "How can Black people be more supportive of all within the diaspora?" will encourage vulnerability, understanding, and unity.
       
      This multi-generational conversation welcomes participants of all ages and perspectives. Join this discussion, it may change your perspective on life!

    • Film Chats: White Scripts and Black Supermen, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
      Join Student Life for an interactive virtual watch party of Jonathan Gayles’ documentary, White Scripts and Black Supermen. This documentary is a "valuable and colorful examination of 40 years of changing representations of Black masculinity in a significant area of popular culture -- comic books."

    • “Get Your Weight Up!”- Being Black and Being in Business, 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
      Creating generational wealth within the Black community is attainable! Now more than ever, we all need to keep our ears and eyes open for opportunities to do so. Three Black professionals will detail their unique journey to financial stability, how they are handling the financial turmoil of the pandemic, and share ways that they have begun to generate wealth. 
       
      Learn how they have made profitable their talents and aspirations, by owning or working for a successful business. 
       
      There will also be time for Q&A with the panelists! Bring your questions! Come out and learn a little something about money & opportunity!
