The Haitian Constitution states that “Creole and French are the official languages.’’  Haiti was a French colony, where French was imposed as the language of commerce.  However, Creole remains the one language that all Haitians understand. English instruction has begun, but if you travel in Haiti, knowing French means that you will be more understood by the people who work in hotels. French is the language of instruction of Haiti. As a variation of the colonial French, the sounds of the Creole, the language that was created by the people of Haiti and the colonials from France, meant that some of the pronunciation of vowels are not exacltly the same, For example Haitians do not have the same placement of'u'.  This French sound is difficult for many learners of French, and not just English-speakers.
