Lymph Vessel, w.m. - 40X

This image shows a piece of a thin membrane, maybe mesentery, that contains a large lymphatic vessel (arrow) and some smaller vessels.

Lymph Vessel, w.m. - 100X

Because this image was made from a whole mount, you are seeing several layers of whole cells superimposed on each other. The darker areas of the image are places where either there are more layers of cells or the cells are thicker. The dark band that runs horizontally through the tissue is a lymphatic vessel. The arrow points to the location of an internal valve. Each lymphatic vessel valve consists of two flaps of tissue that stick out from opposite walls of the vessel. They allow fluid to pass through in one direction only.
