7. Some Specific Topics Having to Do with the
First Half of United States History
Note: When doing subject searches in the UTCAT, there will probably
be both primary sources and secondary sources displayed. Once
the subject is displayed, look at the subheadings in the UTCAT
for that subject. You will probably want to examine the titles
under the subheadings correspondence, diaries, personal narratives,
and sources. There may be other subheadings you will be interested
in as well.
a. Slavery
Two excellent series at UT are discussed below. Also, do the following
subject search: slavery united states history.
Series title: Slavery: Source Material and Critical Literature.
This series has microfiche reproductions of printed publications
of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Huge collection. Some
works are anti-slavery in theme, others pro-slavery. Some titles
are on the Confederacy and Reconstruction. Not all have to do
with U.S. history. Not all are in English, although most are.
The publications are on negative microfiche in the Microforms
Section of the PCL, Level l. They carry call numbers as follows:
MCFICHE ______. (Where the blank is, you will find a specific
catalog number.) Cite by specific author and title. Include series
title in parenthesis (and not italicized) immediately after specific
title. Note: To access this series in the UTCAT, do a title search,
as follows: t slavery source material and critical literature.
All titles in the series will be displayed.
Series title: Plantation Records. Microfiche reproductions of
many published (and some unpublished) primary sources about plantation
life in the South. The publications are on microfiche in the Microforms
