About the Course
Course Description
Instruction in the use of
Internet services and the fundamentals of web page design and web site
development.
Instructional Methodology
I believe that people learn
best by working in a community of learners to construct their own understanding
of the material they are studying. I this course you will learn to use
Microsoft FrontPage to create web pages and web sites.
Course Rationale
Microsoft FrontPage is a
popular and powerful software program used to create web pages and web sites.
It enables you to create a complex web site in a short time.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to
have a basic knowledge of the use of personal computers and of the Windows
operating system. Before taking this course you should know how to use Windows
Explorer to manipulate files. You should have completed COSC 1300. However, you
may take that course concurrently with this one.
Course Objectives
Students taking this course
should be able to:
1.
Use FrontPage to design web sites
2.
Design, develop, and evaluate web pages
3.
Test, manage, and publish web sites
4.
Integrate databases with a web site
5.
Set up and manage a web site outside of
class
Blackboard
This course has a Blackboard
website where you can view your grades, send your instructor emails, and read
important announcements and information about the course, such as the course
syllabus. Each student will be required to enter a working email address on
his/her personal information page in Blackboard. Your instructor will furnish
instructions on how to do this. You will post your lab assignments in the
Assignments area in Blackboard. I will give you instructions on how to do
this.
Supplies and
Requirements
Textbooks and Supplies
Textbook: Jessica Evans, New Perspectives on Microsoft FrontPage 2002
Comprehensive. Course Technology, Inc., 2002. (ISBN; 0-619-04464-0).
You will not be required to
buy any software. I will furnish the files you will need to complete the
exercises. If you wish to save your work on external media you will need to
bring a zip disk or USB device such as a jump drive to class. Your files will
be too large to save on floppy disks. You cannot save your files on CDs because
the computers in our labs do not have CD-burner drives. Each student will have
more than enough disk space on their student drive (your unique portion of the
hard drive) to save all of his/her work for the course.
Requirements of the Class
About Your Grade
Examinations
Five
examinations will be taken in this class. Each exam will count 10.0%, or 100 points toward your final grade. Exam five, the Final, will not
be comprehensive. The dates for each exam and the topics covered on them are
listed below and in the course schedule section of the handout. You will take
each exam in Blackboard in class on the days listed below. You will be allowed
to use your textbook. Each exam will consist of fifty (50) multiple choice
questions.
Exam Dates:
Exam 1 – 09-15
Exam 2 – 10-06
Exam 3 – 10-27
Exam 4 -
11-17
Exam 5 -
12-13
Lab Assignments
You will be responsible for
completing the tutorial in each chapter and the Review Assignment at the end of each chapter. After completing each
assignment you will post in the appropriate folder in the Assignments area in
Blackboard. The lab assignments will count 40 points each, for a total of 360
points toward your final grade in the course.
Quick Check Questions
You will type the answers to
the Quick Check questions in each chapter (tutorial) and post them in the Quick
Check folder in the Assignments area in Blackboard. The Quick Check questions
are worth a total of 90 points toward your final grade in the course.
Attendance
It is very important that
you attend each class unless circumstances beyond your control make attendance
impossible. Some students do not grasp the fact that the students who do well
in this course usually attend class regularly. Attendance will count as five
percent (5%), or 50 points of your total grade. If you
have to leave class early, please contact me before class or at the beginning
of the class period. If you leave class
early without permission, you will be counted absent for that day. The 50
attendance points are awarded if you have no more than three (3) unexcused
absences. I reserve the right to drop you from this class if you have more than
five (5) unexcused absences at any time during the semester and do not
contact me.

Class Policies
Scholastic Dishonesty
“Acts prohibited by the
College for which discipline may be administered include scholastic dishonesty,
including, but not limited to cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing, and
unauthorized collaborating with another in preparing outside work. Academic
work submitted by students shall be the result of their thought, research, or
self-expression. Academic work is defined as, but limited to tests, quizzes,
whether taken electronically or on paper; projects, either individual or group;
classroom presentations, and homework” (Student
Handbook, 2002-2003, p. 32). Any student caught cheating will be dismissed
from the class with a grade of “F.”
Incompletes and Withdrawals
A grade of “I” will be assigned
at my discretion only for extreme emergencies. I will not consider assigning an
“Incomplete” if a student is not up-to-date in class or if the circumstances
are not compelling. ACC’s policy on incompletes is that the student must have
earned enough points to receive a grade of “C” in the course to qualify for a
grade of “I.” If the student who receives an incomplete does not compete the
course before the end of the following semester, the “I” automatically is
changed to an “F.”
A grade of “W” will be assigned
if the student initiates a withdrawal through the Admissions and Records
office, in accordance with the requirements of that office. Although I have the
prerogative to withdraw students for excessive absences or lack of progress, I
am under no obligation to do so. It is the responsibility of the student to
initiate all withdrawal proceedings. If the student fails to complete the work
and also fails to properly withdraw, a grade of A, B, C, D, or F will be
assigned in accordance with the work that is completed. As I said in the
Attendance section of the syllabus, if you have five or more consecutive
unexcused absences at any time during the semester, I reserve the right to drop you from this class!!
Students with Disabilities
“Each ACC campus offers
support services for students with documented physical or psychological
disabilities. Students with disabilities must request reasonable accommodations
through the Office for Students with Disabilities on the campus where they
expect to take the majority of their classes. Students are encouraged to do
this three weeks before the start of the semester” (Student Handbook, 2003-2004, p. 8).
Religious Holy Days
For ACC’s policy on
religious holy days see Student Handbook,
2003-2004, p. 19.
