DESIGN 1 - ACC DE FRESE Cropping / Abstraction

Using Line - the most fundamental element of design

Objective
Create two compositions using:
Weighted line asymmetrical balance
Organic shape scribble line
Geometric shape
Working from a photograph ( provided )

You will create two compositions working from one photograph. You will crop the photograph to find another composition that you find interesting. The found composition may be abstract or non representational. The subject matter is unimportant. The composition - the arrangement and use of shapes, value and line is important. You will be transforming a photograph to a composition using line with various characteristics. Selective cropping will be used to choose an interesting part of the composition which you will enlarge and improve.

Each and every project should be drawn and presented on 18 x 24" drawing paper. The project should be centered horizontally or vertically with a border drawn from the outside edge of the paper. Most projects will follow a similar format. Professional presentation is important and will be a consideration in grading for all projects.

Part 1
1. crop a 2x3" section of your image
2. from this image enlarge it 4 times or 8x12"
3. use pen/ink only
4. use only a weighted scribble line to recreate your composition
get as close as possible to the values used in the chosen image using only line

Part 2
1. photocopy your drawing - 25% larger than actual size
2. crop an interesting 2x3" section
3. use pen/ ink only
4. enlarge this croppped section 4 times or 8 12"
5. use only straight angular lines of varying weights or density to re create the cropped section

Note: you may use a grid system or the light tables to redraw your image in pencil before you start using ink for the finished drawing.

Materials
Pencil (2b) rapidograph (black ink) utility knife
Drawing pad or black ink pen

Procedure

Cut a 2x3 hole in a sheet of paper - use it as a cropping devise to visualize "new" compositions
Choose a strong, interesting section to crop
Enlarge your cropped section 4 times actual size
Recreate as per instructions
