Objective
Explore the process of eye
hand coordination by observing a still life and using "gesture" drawing
Use ebony pencil and conte.
Gesture drawing involves arm movement.
You should stand - arms length from your paper.
Your drawing tool should be in constant contact with the paper - make continuous
marks
Keep your eyes on the object being drawn - make your hand follow the eye movement.
Part 1 - Mass gesture
Make broad marks - use the side of a broken conte crayon- not the tip.
Use your eyes to move through the still - do not concentrate on the edges
Work from the inside out
Part 2 - Line gesture
Use various pressure - give the lines different weights or thickness
Mix the qualities of the lines - you want variety to create interest
Tangle the lines - search for the "right" line - the first line will
not necessarily be the best
Part 3
Combine line and gesture
Part 4
Scribble Line gesture
Use scribbled overlapping lines to define the form
Do not lift your pencil or marker
Edges will be loose and indefinite
Vary the weight of the line
Part 5
Continuous line drawing
Use one continuous line to define the edges, shadows and surrounding space of
the still life
Do not lift your pencil - use a free flowing line - somewhat like the way you
might write your signature
The marks should look as if it could be unwound or raveled
