Basic Math: Geometry

Here are some important formulas from geometry:

Circumference of a circle: c = 2 (pi) r, where r = radius

Area:

  • square: s2, where s = length of one side

  • circle: (pi) r2, where r = radius
  •
    • sphere (surface): 4 (pi) r2, where r = radius

    Volume:

    • cube: s3, where s = length of one side

    • sphere: (4/3) (pi) r3 where r = radius

The Greek letter (pi) has the universally constant value of 3.14159... (3.14 is usually good enough). It was first derived by the Babylonians around 4000 years ago, and has recently been determined to an accuracy of a billion decimal places (yikes!)
