NATURE AND SCOPE OF COURSE:

This course is a survey of American history from Reconstruction through the Reagan administratiion. The approach will be a thematic one in that it will focus of certain selected themes such as the political, diplomatic, economic, and cultural aspects of the American experience.

REQUIREMENTS, TESTS, PAPERS, AND GRADING SYSTEM:

You will be expected to read the text carefully, attend lectures, participate in class discussions, and write some papers for a grade above C, depending on your overall test score.

There will be four unit tests, each covering four chapters of the text. Each test will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions based upon the learning objectives found in a separate class handout and on another page of this web site.(Learning_Objectives_His.html).

Each test is worth 100 points. Many, but by no means all, of the questions will be covered in the class lectures and the computer tutorials found in the computer room and on the web site.  Click here to go to the 1302 tutorials.

To make a C in the course you must have a total of at least 280 points on the four exams. To make a B you must have at least 310 points and write one film critique. To make an A you must have at least 340 points and write two film critiques. Guidelines for the critiques appear in a separate class handout and on another page of this web site.(Critique guidelines.html)

RETESTING POLICY:

One retest if permitted for each of the unit tests, with the final score being the average of the initial test and the retest grades. You must take the retest for the first three unit tests in the testing center within one week after the test grades are returned in class. The retest for Unit IV may be taken only in class during the last class period.

WITHDRAWALS:

It is your responsibility, not the instructor's, to handle the paperwork should you choose to withdraw from the class. The instructor will not withdraw you from the course. Deadline for withdrawal is November 23.

ABSENCES:

You are adults and know what you must do to pass. Attendance is a requirement. There is a high positive correlation between faithful class attendance and good grades.

INCOMPLETES:

Incompletes are permitted only if you have satisfactorily completed three of the fou9r unit tests. If you find you need to take an incomplete grade you must inform the instructor five days before the semester ends, and come to the instructor's office before the end of the semester to sign the necessary forms. You will have one month into the next semester to complete the course. If you do not your grade will automatically become an F.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

In any case of academic dishonesty, whether cheating on an exam, or plagiarizing a film critique, the results will be an F in the course.
