Month-in-Review: February 2019

Feb 23 | Health Science Open House: Austin Community College (ACC)hosted its annual Health Sciences Open House Saturday, February 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eastview Campus for prospective students and their families to explore careers in healthcare. More than 700 guests attended to tour facilities, view live demonstrations, and meet with faculty and staff of the Health Sciences Area of Study. Enrollment services, financial aid, advising and Kinesiology representatives also attended.   

Feb 27 | Voter-Friendly Campus: ACC has been designated as a "Voter Friendly Campus" for the 2019-2020 time period by national nonpartisan organizations Campus Vote Project and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. ACC is one of a select group of campuses from around the country that received the designation thanks to the college’s efforts to break down barriers and empower students with the information and tools they need to participate in the political process. Feb 28 - Mar 1 | Amplify Austin: Austin Community College (ACC) raised$3,160 from online and cash gifts during Austin’s 24-hour day of giving, Amplify Austin. The money raised for the Alumni Network Scholarship will go directly to help a part-time student become a full-time student, allowing them to more quickly complete their studies at ACC and move on to the workforce or transfer to a four-year university.   • Department/Team Contest:  The 2019 Leadership Academy Cohort banded together to raise almost $1,000 and will win lunch for the entire class at the Riverbat Cafe in April.
  • Top ACC Employee Fundraiser: Natalia Almanza, High School Programs enrollment and outreach coordinator. She will receive two complimentary tickets to the Alumni Network Sunset Bat Cruise in May.
  • ACC Employee With the Most Individual Donors: Shellie Withrow, Vocational Nursing professor. She will receive two tickets to ACC Night at the Round Rock Express.
  • Most Social Media Impressions: Alumnus Jose Sosa’s winning bilingual facebook post received several comments and was shared 13 times, securing him two comped registrations to the Riverbat Paddle Battle and two tickets to the after party on April 6.

Mar 3 | Fairway 5k Recap: About 200 people signed up and 88 participants — including ACC President Dr. Richard Rhodes andPhysical Therapy department chair Jose Milan and his team — braved the cold weather to cross the finish line for the Fairway 5K. The event raised more than $3,500 and a portion of the proceeds will be allocated to Physical Therapy scholarships. Mar 4 | Board approves new degree plan: The ACC Board of Trustees approved two new associate degrees to prepare students for jobs in Austin's growing agriculture economy. The Associate of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture and Associate of Science in Agriculture will launch with specialized courses beginning fall 2019. Classes will be held at the college's Sustainable Student Farm located at Elgin Campus. Student scholarships will be available through a NIFA USDA grant.
