Adopt a pet cared for by ACC vet tech students

Austin Community College (ACC) is working with area animal shelters to find forever homes for pets who were trained and cared for by students in the Veterinary Technology Program.

Over the past semester, these dogs have undergone leash training and socialization, been microchipped, and received medical care, including vaccinations and heartworm prevention.

"It's always difficult to let them go. One of our main focuses is to try to get them adopted," says Wendy White, a Vet Tech student. "We take them on walks every single day. We find playgroups for them so they are socialized with other dogs or cats.

Since the Vet Tech Program launched five years ago, many students and faculty members have adopted pets for themselves, friends, or family members.

"I personally have taken home a dog and a cat which I didn't really need, because I already have several," said Dr. Regina Bohmfalk, Vet Tech professor. "They're hard to resist. They look at you with those big eyes, and you can't say no."

ACC cares for about a dozen animals each semester. Over the months, faculty and students learn about each pet's personalities to determine who may good with children, which ones are lap pets, and those who are very active.

"We appreciate Bastrop Animal shelter being willing to work with us. They have let the students work with their animals for several years now," says Kerry Coombs, Veterinary Technology department chair. "We need to have animals for students to work with. This gives them, and us, a chance to give back to those animals that come here."

Animals that are not adopted by the end of the semester are returned to the Bastrop Animal Shelter, an open intake facility.
