Grant Development FAQs

Who does the Grant Development & Compliance Office serve?

Grant Development & Compliance serves all of the college’s campuses and centers (faculty, staff, and administration) to obtain external funding through competitive grants.

I am a student seeking grants for my education; what should I do?

Students wishing to apply for a grant as financial aid should view the Financial Aid webpage.

Can I apply for a grant at any time?

Few grantors accept applications at any time. Most Requests for Proposals (RFPs) specify a deadline date when the grantor must have the completed proposal in hand for the application to be considered. Some agencies request that a preliminary proposal be submitted first, with a full proposal developed only on subsequent invitation.

Can I complete a grant application on my own?

Yes; however, Grant Development & Compliance must still process the completed application and obtain administrative approval, so please contact us as soon as you decide to apply for a grant. The college requires that all applications are processed through the Grant Development & Compliance Department. This promotes cooperation between campuses and centers, rather than competition for grant dollars. It also helps ensure that Record to Report (R2R) has approved the budget.

How soon will I find out if a proposal will be funded?

The length of time between submittal and notification varies. Some agencies take six months or longer to decide which applications will be funded.

Does Grant Development & Compliance manage the project's budget if the grant is awarded?

The project’s budget and reports are managed by the Record to Report (R2R) Department, which is separate from Grant Development & Compliance.

Who is authorized to sign a proposal submitted by ACC?

Only the college chancellor, Dr. Richard M. Rhodes, or his authorized signature authority.

What determines whether or not a grant application is pursued?

When deciding whether you should pursue a grant, ask these questions:

  • Does the opportunity align with ACC’s strategic plan?
  • Is there a need for the project?
  • Does it fit with staff and/or faculty expertise?
  • Are the funds to be awarded sufficient to cover the project?
  • Would the outcomes of the project be worth the investment?
  • Does ACC have the capacity to sustain the initiative?

The Grant Development & Compliance Office will help you determine whether you should pursue a project.

What is the process if another college asks me if ACC can be a partner on a grant?

Please contact the Grant Development Office. Be advised that only the college chancellor or his authorized signature authority can approve ACC’s participation in a grant partnership.

What is the process for obtaining letters of support?

All letters of support, including those that are being sent in support of other colleges or agencies, must first be submitted to Grant Development & Compliance. After approval by Grant Development & Compliance, letters of support will be approved and signed by the college chancellor, Richard M. Rhodes, Ph.D., or his authorized signature authority. No one but the chancellor or his authorized signature authority is permitted to submit letters of support on behalf of ACC.

What happens after a grant is funded?

There is usually a delay before receiving news from the funding source about the approval or disapproval of the grant. Activities in the grant application may be negotiated prior to contracting. Contracts need to be signed before any work is done. Once contracted, a meeting will be held to review the implementation plan and work can begin. The Grants Compliance officer provides support as needed and Record to Report (R2R) manages financial activities. The fund source usually requires periodic reports about the results of the grant.
