Turn the plate horizontal and shake it a little bit to randomize the balls, then turn it vertical and shake it lightly until the balls settle into a regular arrangment. Notice that in some regions the balls are very organized in a hexagonal pattern. Where the regions meet, there are discernable defects. This is similar to the way crystals form in solids such as salt or ice. There will be regions that are very organized and regular, but then there are cracks or defects where the crystal can break easily.
