ACC 2020 Virtual Commencement Celebration FAQs

  • Will there be a spring commencement ceremony?
    • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and required social distancing practices, ACC will postpone its spring commencement ceremony. All spring 2020 graduates are invited to fully participate in the college’s next in-person commencement (possibly as early as December 2020, pending federal and regional safety requirements.)

To immediately recognize our spring graduates and their achievements, ACC will host a virtual celebration. The ACC 2020 Virtual Commencement Celebation will air on the ACC website.

  • Will future in-person ceremonies be held?
    • Yes. In addition to the ACC 2020 Virtual Commencement Celebration on June 6, ACC is committed to providing an opportunity for all spring graduates to cross the stage at the December 11, 2020 graduation ceremony. Graduates will receive an invitation letter from the Graduation Office and an email with an opportunity to RSVP in the fall. We cannot be certain when CDC, city and state guidelines for social distancing and prohibitions of large gatherings will change, so any future ceremony dates may be subject to cancelation or rescheduling.

  • Does participating in this virtual celebration mean I cannot attend in-person ceremonies later?
    • We encourage our spring 2020 graduates to join us for both events. The ACC 2020 Virtual Celebration is a way to allow graduates to commemorate their achievements this spring, until public health officials report that it is safe to gather in person.

  • How do I participate in the spring ACC 2020 Virtual Commencement Celebration?
    • The ACC Graduation Office has notified all candidates of their graduation status. In addition to their status letter, candidates have also received an email from the Vice-President of Student Affairs, announcing the virtual celebration. During the week of April 27, students will receive an email from the Graduation Office with further instructions and a profile registration link. This is where students may upload a photo and personal message, to be included on their unique recognition slide along with their name and the degree or certificate they are completing.

  • What will be included in the virtual celebration?
    • We are planning to include speeches, recognition of graduates’ individual achievements through a personalized recognition slide, and a platform where graduates may enjoy a communal moment through social media.

  • Do I have to participate in the virtual celebration?
    • All graduates will receive access to view the virtual celebration. You are not required to submit a photo or information to participate. If you choose to do so, your response and participation is acknowledgment of a public presentation of your name, photo and degree or certificate information. Please note, if you do not respond to the request for participation, a slide with your name and your certificate or degree will be presented along with the rest of the graduating class, unless you have requested privacy on your ACC records.

  • Do I need to purchase a cap and gown?
    • No. It is not necessary to wear a cap and gown for the virtual celebration. However, you will have the opportunity to submit a photo of yourself. If you would like to include a photo in traditional graduation attire, please consider purchasing from any online or local retailer.

  • Can I purchase graduation announcements?
    • Graduates can order announcement through the ACC bookstores here.

  • Do I need to participate in this celebration or a future ceremony to graduate?
    • No. If students choose not to take part in any ceremony and their degree or certificate academic requirements are met, similar to prior years, students will receive their certificates or diplomas six to eight weeks after the degree conferral date.

  • How will I receive my diploma?
    • When students' academic requirements are met, similar to prior years, they will receive their certificates diplomas in the mail. Diplomas are mailed approximately six to eight weeks after the degree conferral date. Graduates will receive an email notification via their ACC email account when their diploma has been mailed. Diplomas are mailed to the student's diploma mailing address. For more information, visit https://www.austincc.edu/students/graduation

  • If I decide to participate in the December ceremony, will my degree still be conferred and dated May 2020?
    • Yes, your degree will still be conferred in May 2020. Spring graduates will participate in all the same ways as the summer and fall graduates in December.

  • If I attend the December ceremony, how do I get my Phi Theta Kappa honor cords?
    • Information about how to obtain your Phi Theta Kappa honor cords will be available in the fall.

  • I've heard that ACC is also creating a Class of 2020 Memory Book. How do I add my picture and message to the memory book?
    • We will soon share a link with you to submit information. The Class of 2020 Memory Book is a one-time, special edition memory book for the Spring 2020 graduating class. Start collecting photos of you with classmates and friends, special moments, and favorite events. A copy of this book will be mailed to you later this summer. Additional information can be found on the 2020 Memory Book page.
