Purposes and Patterns Overview:

Purpose ----------->
controls “how the message is created, what details are included and excluded, and how those details are organized” (Polnac 2).

1. Literary

3. Persuasive
-defend a position
-propose a solution
-evaluate a subject

4. Referential
-convey info
-explore a subject

Pattern focuses on how the information is arranged and developed. Each reading selection has a primary or dominant pattern.   However, keep in mind that most readings will use multiple patterns.

1. Classification
sorts items into groups
    -formal
    -comparison and contrast
    -definition

 

 

 

 

2. Evaluation
presents the subject, makes a judgment, and uses criteria to evaluate the subject

 

 

 

 

3. Narration
 organizes by time
    -narration of an event
    -narration of a process
    -cause & effect

 

 

 

 

4. Division
breaks something down into its key parts
     -physical description
      of a person, place, or thing
     -analysis
