What's in the course?

This is such a nice course! We get to explore a number of ways that mathematics can be used to solve problems relevant to construction, surveying, measurement, and other technical areas. Last fall, for a little project in the course, we used the geometry we were learning to estimate the heights of various buildings around campus and then later used trigonometry to refine those estimates. Other students thought we were kind of strange as we measured lengths of arms and shadows and things to help in this. Can you see how those would be helpful? If not, join us this fall and find out!

Why is there only one section of this course?

I talk with some of the faculty members in the applied technology areas quite a lot and they tell me that students are frustrated because we only have one section of this course. (We always offer one section at NRG in the fall and one section at RVS in the spring.) Because of that, applied technology students often take one of the other mathematics courses to satisfy their math requirement. I wish we could offer more sections to have a wider variety of times and locations. But it all depends on the number of students who want to take the course. (If more people would sign up for it, we'd offer more sections.) If this course is listed in your degree plan, even if this isn't an ideal time for you or an ideal location, I hope you will seriously consider enrolling in this rather than taking one of the other math courses. I think you will find that this meets your needs much better than any of our other courses.

Prerequisite, Course Material, etc:

The prerequisite for the course includes knowledge of basic algebra. If you have any questions about whether you have met the prerequisite, check here.
