Patterns of Writing - Evaluation:

1. The Subject

2. The Judgment

3. The Criteria

What are you making a judgment about?

Is the judgment positive, negative, or mixed?

Why is the judgment good, bad, or mixed?

Below is an introductory paragraph which introduces the subject
and states the writer’s thesis statement.

Chuy’s is a Tex-Mex restaurant with locations in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, Texas.  Owners Mike Young and John Zapp opened the first Chuy’s in Austin in 1982. There are now a total of eight restaurants.  Three are in Austin.  The original one is on Barton Springs, and there is one on North Lamar, and one on Highway 183.  They are open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.  I have been eating at Chuy’s for seventeen years because it provides quality food, a relaxed atmosphere, and top-notch service.

The criteria—quality food, relaxed atmosphere, and top-notch service—would be developed in the body paragraphs.
